U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Washington College, in 1809, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1813 and practiced law in Jonesborough, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1815-17) and served in the Tennessee State Senate, (1817-21). In 1823, he was elected as a Jacksonian Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and reelected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth through Twenty-third Congresses, serving until 1835. An unsuccessful candidate for re-election, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives, (1849-50).
