Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a captain in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Sergeant in Company D, 5th Michigan Infantry, for action on May 6, 1864, during the Wilderness Campaign in Virginia. His citation reads "Capture of flag of 31st North Carolina (C.S.A.) in a personal encounter."
