Major League Baseball Player. Nicknamed 'Daddy Long Legs' because of his long legs and tall, thin stature, he was a right-handed pitcher who made his Major League debut for the Philadelphia Athletics on April 14, 1942 at the age of 24. He pitched for the Athletics from 1942 to 1947 and for the Cleveland Indians, with whom he won the World Series in 1948. He ended his career with 54 wins, 64 loss, 35 saves, 424 strikeouts and a 3.37 earned run average. He died as a result of Rheumatic Heart Disease at the age of 37.
