Traveled aboard the J. J. Cobb from Crowell, New York to California, arrived in San Francisco January 28th, 1853. His wife and child stayed in Vermont.
Depress and possibly homesick, he tried to commit suicide (13 Feb. 1853), the wounds although very severe, were not fatal. He later traveled to Marysville, Yuba County, CA, where he died of dysentery.
