Elmer, was the son of James Mickel and Rachel White. He was married to Wealthy Mary Jane Cartwright, daughter of famous pioneer Methodist minister Rev. Peter Cartwright, who was seven years older than him. Elmer was from an old Cape May, New Jersey family, the Mickel's and van Gilder's. Elmer was a farmer on land given to him by his father-in-law, Rev. Peter Cartwright. He also served as Sheriff for Cartwright Township, and at age 37 years, served as a Private in the civil War, 1862/3. He died, Monday at 5:00 o'clock a.m. at his home, age 67 years of the la grippe (flu) and typhoid. Elmer was a resident of Pleasant Plains for over 40 years. He is buried with his wife, and Gorham Eaton, 1st husband of his wife at Bethel Cemetery. They all share a tombstone.
