At Appomattox, he carried the flag of truce to the Union lines. After the Civil War, he was a planter in Montgomery, Alabama from 1865 to 1868. He was the editor of the Montgomery Daily Picayune in 1868. He entered private practice in Montgomery in 1868. He was the reporter of decisions for the Supreme Court of Alabama from 1870 to 1880, a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1884 to 1888, serving as Speaker from 1886 to 1888 and Governor of Alabama from 1890 to 1894.
