Born Ruth Amelia Smith, she was the daughter of Ed and Ona Smith (nee Myers). Her mother, Ona, passed away when Ruth was 3 years old, and her brother, Cleo, was 6 years old. Her father, Ed Smith, took his son Cleo and left Oklahoma. She was left with her deceased mother's family. The last time she saw her father, ED, and brother, Cleo, was when she was 3 years old. She never saw them after they left Oklahoma. I remember my grandma talking about her brother, Cleo, and how much she wanted to see him. She had heard her father passed away.
Ruth lost her entire family when her mother died as her father and brother left to never return.
Ruth Amelia Smith was raised and educated in Alva, Oklahoma.
October 21, 1935, she married Thomas S. Munyon in Medford, Oklahoma. In November 1946 the couple moved to Glendale, Oregon with their 5 children - Jeddy, Gladys, Tom, Raymond, and Nancy. After the Oregon move the couple had 3 more children - Wayde, Sam, and Anna Mae. Ruth was a homemaker and mother of 8 children.
She is remembered working hard, doing housework, caring for children, cooking, canning, and sewing. She made the best bread rolls from yeast. She made delicious holiday dinners for her family. Many loved her pineapple pie. She made banana pudding the Oklahoma way. Ruth attended church in Glendale, and was a firm believer in God. After her husband's death, she dated Louis Smart, for several years until her death.
She loved her grandchildren. She had a grandson she always wanted to see. The child's mother divorced my grandma's son, Raymond, when the baby was two years old. After the divorce grandma never got to see her grandson, and she was heartbroken. I remember her talking about little Jake and crying. On her death bed, she requested again to see her grandson. Sadly, her request never materialized.
Years before her death and the deaths of any of her children, Ruth said "The Lord told me I will bury 2 sons before I die." This statement proved to be true, as she lost sons Raymond, and Jeddy.
Grandma did not curse or use bad language. When she got angry, she would wave her hand in the air, and say "By Jingle Hoofer".
November 11, 1991 grandma died at Douglas Community Hospital in Roseburg.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ed Smith; mother, Ona Smith; husband, Thomas S. Munyon; brother, Cleo Smith; sons Jeddy Jess and Raymond Frank Munyon.
She is survived by: three daughters; Gladys Leona McManus of Eugene, Nancy Marie Hatton of Myrtle Creek, Anna Mae Dancer of Myrtle Creek: three sons, Thomas Lee Munyon of Coos Bay, Wayde Carl Munyon of Roseburg, Samuel Joel Munyon of Glendale. Numerous grand and great grandchildren who love and miss her.
My grandmother was a good, honest person, who missed having relationships with her mother, father, brother, and grandson.
