~~~Bio~~~
Kate PARENTS are James Birdsall (Find A Grave Memorial # 7446569) and Rispah Steere Birdsall (Find A Grave Memorial # 66253117).
Her first MARRIAGE was to Judge William Newton (Find A Grave Memorial #: 31045795) of Flint, Michigan.
NEWTON, WILLIAM -- BIRDSALL, CATHERINE V01 461 1043 04/21/1855
They had one daughter, Jessie Newton (Find A Grave Memorial # 31045825), who died as a child.
William and Kate are in the 1860 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS:
Citation Information
Year: 1860; Census Place: Flint, Genesee, Michigan; Roll: M653_544; Page: 40; Image: 40; Family History Library Film: 803544
William filed for a divorce contained in this record:
MICHIGAN, WILLS AND PROBATE RECORDS 1784-1980, Name William Newton
Probate Date 27 Nov 1866
Probate Place Genesee, Michigan, USA
Case Number 899
Item Description: Case, Box 23, File 53-73-Box 24, File 1-32, 1865-1866
Kate had deserted William (according to William's account in the divorce hearing) and went to live in San Francisco, where she met and married Robert Carlton Johnson. Robert appears to have died in Paris, France, but no record of that has been located nor a Find A Grave Memorial.
Here is a NEWSPAPER ARTICLE reviewing Kate’s will. It mentions several of her brother and sister Birdsall’s. She also leaves $10,000 to William Newton of Flint, Michigan. I don’t know if she meant her former husband or William’s son by his second wife, also named William Newton:
