U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced to practice law in Cumming, Georgia. At the advent of the Civil War in 1861, he was a member of the Georgia State Senate and opposed Georgia’s secession from the Union. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel of the 43rd Georgia Regiment, Confederate Army and was a member of the Second Confederate Congress, (1864-65). After the war, he was a member of the Democratic State executive committee, (1868-71) and elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third Congress, serving (1873-75). He was again elected to the Forty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Benjamin H. Hill, serving (1877-79). After his term he was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1898-99) and served in the Georgia State Senate, (1900-01). He died in retirement at age 78.
