Abyssinia Expedition Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Killbriken, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 33rd Regiment of Foot, British Army. On April 13, 1868, during an assault on Magdala, Abyssinia, the 33rd Regiment of Foot, checked by the obstacles at the gate entrance. Private Bergin with a few others broke away from the main approach, forced their way over a wall and turned the defenders of the gateway away. He then was one of the first to enter Magdala. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on July 28, 1868. He died at age 35 in Poona, India.
