MARIETTA - Charles G. Barnhart, 73, of Muskingum Drive, Marietta died May 13, 2003, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Warner, Ohio, a son of Homer and Clara Lauer Barnhart. He was a graduate of Salem-Liberty High School in Lower Salem and had been owner of Barnhart's Sohio Service Station at Seventh and Green streets for many years. He then became Standard Oil Fuel distributor until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He enjoyed volunteering at Campus Martius and the Ohio River Museum. He developed the technique of feeding the carp with a baby bottle and also enjoyed showing museum visitors how to do it.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jenny Carleton Barnhart; one son, Lynn Barnhart of the home; one daughter, Loretta Barnhart Phelps and her husband, Allen, of Marietta; one granddaughter, Amy Phelps Mendenhall and her husband, Jeremy; and one great-granddaughter, Mara, all of Belpre. He also is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Pierpoint and her husband, Roy, and Kathryn Heldman and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Lee Carleton Barnhart.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with the Rev. Nancy O'Dell officiating. Interment will be in Salem Township Cemetery. Friends may call until the hour of the services today at the funeral home.
