U.S. Senator. Self educated, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Amelia County, Virginia. In the late 1700s, he was part of an expedition with Daniel Boone exploring the territory of eastern Tennessee and western Kentucky. Also at this time he was a Colonel of militia and led four companies of Virginians against hostile Indians in Tennessee, in 1776. Upon the admission of Tennessee as a State into the Union was elected to the United States Senate, serving (1796-97) and again elected to the United States Senate as a Democratic Republican, serving (1799-1805). In 1809, he was appointed judge of the first circuit in Mississippi and served under General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. After the war, he was elected to the Mississippi Legislature in 1813 and appointed by President James Madison as Indian agent for the Chickasaw Nation, in 1814.
