U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He attended the Kentucky Military Institute, University of the South in Tennessee and the University of Heidelberg Germany. He studied law at the University of Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1877, moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi, in 1878, practiced law and also ran a cotton plantation. He was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving (1893-1909). In 1910, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1923. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he retired from politics and returned to his family plantation until his death.
