US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent Tennessee's 8th District in the Thirty-first Congress, he served from 1849 to 1851. Ewing was an 1832 graduate of the University of Nashville, where he became a lifelong trustee the following year. He was admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced law practice in his hometown. In 1850 he chose not to seek reelection to Congress, and apart from serving as a delegate to the 1860 Democratic National Convention, pursued no political office. During the Civil War Ewing was a Confederate judge of General Braxton Bragg's military court. He died in Atlanta one day short of his 51st birthday. His brother Edwin Hickman Ewing was also a Congressman from Tennessee. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
