U.S. Congressman. He attended the Tennessee State Teachers' College and George Peabody College, graduated from the University of Tennessee, and taught school in Culleoka, Tennessee (1920-26). He was a member of the editorial staff of the Nashville Tennessean (1926-40). In 1941, he was elected as an Independent Democrat to the Seventy-seventh Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death. He died from complications which developed from an ulcer operation at age 56.
