Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the 14th Light Dragoons, later the 14th Hussars, British Army. On April 1, 1858, at Betwa, India, Lieutenant Leith's regiment was surrounded by a large number of rebel infantry. When a company Captain was in immediate danger after being wounded, Lieutenant Leith charged forward alone and rescued him. For extreme bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and promoted Major. He remained in the Army and later achieved the rank of Major General.
