Kate was a school teacher prior to their marriage on 03 Aug 1879 in Rice Co., MN.

Kate's husband, William, invented the self-supporting staircase used at the third Minnesota Capitol Building. William showed his brothers-in-law his new invention a few years before his death. When Kate's brothers' building company was selected by architect Cass Gilbert (memorial #8198783) to build the third capitol building, they showed him William's staircase invention. Mr. Gilbert was impressed and adapted his plans to include William's staircase. William died on April 22nd just a few days before construction on the capitol broke ground (06 May 1896). William's self-supporting staircase invention is still in use today. See capitol construction photos at: https://search.mnhs.org/index.php?q=Capitol+(3rd)+construction&brand=cms
