World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion of the Auckland Infantry Regiment. At Bapaume, France, August 26, 1918, he led a small bombing party under heavy fire in attack on a German position. He went out alone and extinguished three machine gun crews, capturing two officers and ten men. When they tried to escape firing on him, he killed two and forced the remaining to surrender. For extreme courage, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later achieved the rank of Major.
