World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel Commander of the 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. On September 15, 1916, at Ginchy, France, Lieutenant Colonel Campbell personally led an attack against the German machine guns, capturing the guns and killing the personnel. Later in the day, he again rallied his battalion through a very hostile fire against the objective and was the first to enter the enemy trench. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in October 1916 and later achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
