U.S. Congressman. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he graduated from East Tennessee College in 1829, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Knoxville. He was appointed Knox County Attorney General in 1835 and was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1837-39). In 1845, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses, serving until 1849. During the Civil War, he was affiliated with the Democratic Party, supported the Confederate States secession and wrote newspaper editorials about the war issues. He retired from public life after the war and engaged in literary pursuits until his death at age 77 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
