U.S. Congressman. He was a newspaper editor before being elected as a United States Representative from Tennessee in 1897. He served until he was elected as the United States Senator from Tennessee and served from 1901 to 1907. In 1908, he lost an election for Tennessee governor to Malcolm Patterson. Carmack, now editor of the Nashville paper, waged a vicious war of words against Patterson. The result was a gun battle that left Carmack dead and two of Patterson's advisers charged with murder.
