Colonel Donald E. Wessen, USAF (Ret)

Colonel Wessen died Sunday, October 23, 2011. Born in Concord, NH, he was the son of the late Carl E. Wessen and Rose Anna Guignard Wessen. He graduated from St. John's High School in Concord, NH in 1948, received his BS in Civil Engineering from New England College in Henniker, NH in 1951, his MS in Public Administration from The George Washington University in 1964, a Math Teaching Endorsement from the University of New Hampshire in 1975. He was a retired United States Air Force Colonel having received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and other awards. Colonel Wessen was last assigned as Operations Planner in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon and had an aeronautical rating of Master Navigator. After his retirement from the US Air Force, he was employed with the Concord New Hampshire School District as Attendance Officer in 1975, from 1975 to 1980 Mr. Wessen was an Engineer, Air Pollution Control Agent for the State of New Hampshire, from 1980 to 1987 he taught Mathematics at Pembroke Academy, NH. He also taught Mathematics at Brunswick Community College in NC.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis and his first wife Cynthia, a son and daughter, two step-children and numerous other relatives.
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Colonel Donald Everett Wessen, USAF, (Retired), 81, of Lugoff passed away October 23, 2011 in Columbia, S.C.

The son of Carl and Rose Wessen, Donald was born in Concord, April 24, 1930. He was a graduate of St. John's High School, New England College, and George Washington University.

Donald was a retired United States Air Force Colonel having received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and other awards. Colonel Wessen was last assigned as Operations Planner in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon and had an aeronautical rating of Master Navigator.

Donald and his family made their home in Bow, upon retirement from the USAF. Mr. Wessen was employed with the Concord School District as Attendance Officer; an Engineer and Air Pollution Control Agent for the State of New Hampshire: and he taught Mathematics at Pembroke Academy, in Suncook. Mr. Wessen was the 1983-1984 Pembroke Academy Teacher of the Year. After moving to Oak Island, N.C., Mr. Wessen taught Mathematics at Brunswick Community College in Southport. Donald recently divided his time between Lugoff, S.C. and Linville, N.C.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Wessen of Lugoff, S.C.; son, Douglas Wessen of Juneau, Alaska and daughter, Lynn Phillippe and her husband Buddy of Spotsylvania, Va.; step-children Gregory Chavez and his wife Kelly of Clayton, N.C. and Angela Braswell and her husband Bengie of Kenly, N.C.; step-grandchildren, Lane Phillippe, Kimberly Klock and her husband Jonny, Riggs, Landen, and Owen Chavez, Taylor and Morgan Baker and Emily Braswell; step-great-grandchildren; Christopher Phillippe, and Koy and Kaitlyn Klock; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his first wife, Cynthia Wessen of Penacock.
