U.S. Congressman. Educated at William Closs Academy, he then engaged in agricultural pursuits. During the Civil War, he served in Company D, 1st Regiment, North Carolina Volunteer Infantry, Confederate Army and was with the Army of General Robert E. Lee until the surrender at Appomattox. After the war, he returned to farming, joined the Farmers’ Alliance and became the first president of the Chatham County Alliance, in 1887. He was a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1890, 92, 96). In 1899, he was elected as an Independent Populist to the Fifty-sixth Congress, serving until 1901. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed agricultural pursuits until his death at age 69.
