The Honorable William Greenleaf was the Sheriff of Suffolk County from Oct. 31, 1775 to Dec. 14, 1780.

As sheriff he proclaimed the Declaration of Independence from the Old State House in 1776.


William was the youngest son of Daniel and Elizabeth Greenleaf. He married Mary Brown on June 3, 1747 in Boston, Massachusetts, and they had fifteen children. The Provincial Congress appointed him Sheriff of Suffolk during the Revolutionary War.
