Polly Hanst, birth name Vera Pauline Johnson but always known as Polly, was born and raised on her parents' farm at Middle Run in Braxton County, West Virginia. She graduated from West Virginia University and in later life received the university's Order of the Vandalia. She spent most of her married life in Oakland, Maryland, as a teacher and civic leader. For over 50 years, she was an instructor at the West Virginia 4-H camp at Jackson's Mill, West Virginia. She and her husband had three children, one son who died in 1991 and a son and daughter living as of October 2017. The husband of her daughter, Thomas Brown, is buried next to her Hanst family's graves in this cemetery.
