Film Director. He was a 20th century French film director, who received the 1952 Academy Award for Best Film in a Foreign Language for his film "Jeux Interdits." His 1956 film "Gervaise" was Oscar-nominated for "Best Foreign Language Film" and received several European awards. He was honored several times by the Cannes Film Festival. Besides his award-winning films, he directed films such as "La Bataille du Rail" in 1946, "Les Maudits" in 1947, "This Angry Age" in 1958, "Plein Soleil" in 1960, "Paris brûle-t-il?" in 1966 and "Le Passager de la Pluie" in 1969. While studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts, he developed an interest in filmmaking. In 1936, he directed his first short 20-minute film. Although his work did decline, Clément continued to make films until his retirement in 1975 on the French Riviera. In 1984 the French motion picture industry honored his lifetime contribution to film with a special César Award. He is credited with directing at least 33 films as well as co-writing 13 of these films. He did make a rare appearance as an actor. He was married twice and a widower once.
