US Congressman. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he graduated from the University of Newark, then from the New Jersey Law School in 1937 and was admitted to the bar in 1938. He was lawyer in private practice, a teacher of public speaking and managing editor of the Jersey Review. During World War II, he served in the US Army (1941-46), with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa, Italy, being awarded the Bronze Star Medal, War Cross and Knight of Order of Crown from Italy, for his military operations. Entering politics after the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first Congress and to the next nineteen succeeding Congresses, serving (1949-89). During his terms, he was noted for being the moderator for the fair impeachment hearings of President Nixon (1973-74), conducted the impeachment proceedings against Harry E. Claiborne, judge of the US District Court for Nevada, in 1986 and conducted the impeachment proceedings against Alcee Lamar Hastings, judge of the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, in 1988. After retiring from politics in 1989, he was a professor at Seton Hall University Law School New Jersey, (1989-2005). He died of heart failure at age 95 in West Orange, New Jersey.
