U.S. Congressman. After receiving his education, he taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1832 and began to practice law in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was the solicitor Guilford County and a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1846-56). In 1857, he was elected as the candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fifth Congress and reelected as a candidate of the Opposition Party to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a member of the Second Confederate Congress, in 1864. After the war, delegate to the Union National Convention of Conservatives at Philadelphia, in 1866.
