US Senator. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, he graduated from Furman University, in 1919 and was newspaper reporter, sports editor, editor, business manager and publisher, of the Greenville News. During World War I, he served as an instructor in the US Army at Camp Perry in 1918 and was a Colonel on the Governor’s staff, (1930-34). In August 1941, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Alva M. Lumpkin and served for the remainder of that term. Not a candidate for election, he resumed his newspaper interests. He died at age 69 in Greenville, South Carolina.
