U.S. Congressman, North Carolina Governor. Born in Concord, North Carolina, he graduated from Princeton College in 1776, studied medicine and as a surgeon in the North Carolina militia Continual Army during the Revolutionary War, (1778-82). After the war, he practiced medicine at the High Hills of Santee, South Carolina, then returned to North Carolina and continued to practice medicine. Entering politics, he was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons in 1797 and served in the North Carolina State Senate, (1801-02. In 1803, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighth and Ninth Congresses, serving until he resigned in 1805. That same year, he was elected as a Democratic-Republican the 13th Governor of North Carolina, serving (1805-07). He died shortly after his term at the age 52 in Salisbury, North Carolina.
