U.S. Congressman. He moved with his parents in early youth and settled in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and engaged extensively in planting. He was a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1813, 1815-19). In 1819, he was elected as a Federalist to the Fifteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Daniel M. Forney, was reelected to the Sixteenth Congress, serving until 1821. After his term, he was again elected a member of the State senate, (1827-30) and then resumed his previous business pursuits until his death at age 79.
