U.S. Senator. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he graduated from Harvard University in 1810, studied law, admitted to the bar, then proceeded to practiced law in Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives in 1846 and judge of the chancery court, in 1847. In 1852, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of R. Barnwell Rhett, serving until 1853. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was a trustee of South Carolina College, until his death at age 78 in Columbia, South Carolina.
