U.S. Senator. Born the grandson of Revolutionary War Major General and U.S. Senator Joseph Cilley, after whom he was named, he graduated from Atkinson Academy and engaged in agricultural pursuits. During the War of 1812, he served as a Captain in the 21st Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army. After the war, he served as Quartermaster Officer and Division Inspector in the New Hampshire Militia (1817 to 1821). He also served as aide-de-camp to New Hampshire Governor Benjamin Pierce and continued his agricultural pursuits. Entering politics in 1846, he was elected as a Democrat-Liberty to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Levi Woodbury, serving until 1847. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he retired to his farm until his death. His brother, Jonathan Cilley, was also a U. S. Senator.
