Commander Vescelius was a member of Light Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron 63, U.S. Navy. On October 21, 1967, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-8A) on a combat mission about 8 miles west-southwest of Quang Yen near the border of Thai Binh and Quang Ninh Provinces, North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. He ejected successfully but taken prisoner. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on October 24, 1985.
