U.S. Congressman. He attended High Hill Academy, Graham Institute and was a successful farmer. During the Civil War, he served as a Private in the Confederate Army. After the war, he resumed farming and was a member of the North Carolina State Constitutional Convention in 1875. In 1895, he was elected as a Populist to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to the Fifty-fifth Congress, serving until 1899. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he continued farming until his death.
