Following his death in office while still serving in the United States Congress, he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative Charles William Frederick Dick (1858-1945), first through a special election to finish his term and then reelected on November 8, 1898. Following his death, funeral services were held in his honor, and he was buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson, Ohio. He was married to Lydia Ann Dodge Northway (1839-1898), in Lenox, Ohio, on January 1, 1862, with whom he had two children, Clara Northway (1866- 1935, last name later Burns), and Bruce Orange Northway (1870-1876). His wife Lydia survived him by only a few weeks and she passed away in Ashtabula, Ohio, on September 30, 1898, at the age of 59, and she is also buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson, Ohio.
