Civil War Union Brigadier General. General Opdycke, whose full name was Samuel Emerson Opdycke, was born on his father's farm in Ohio. During the California gold rush, he made two trips to the gold fields, but eventually went into the mercantile business. Enlisting after the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run), Opdycke fought at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, in the Atlanta Campaign, and at Franklin, Tennessee, being badly wounded in the arm at Resaca, Georgia. He was brevetted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers after Franklin, and later was given the full rank of Brig. Gen. (July 26, 1865). After the war he engaged in the dry goods business in New York and accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while cleaning his pistol on April 22, 1884. He died three days later at the age of 54. His body was returned to Ohio for burial.
