U.S. Congressman. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1787, studied medicine, moved to New Lisbon, Ohio, in 1807, and practiced medicine. During the War of 1812, he served as a Major General in the Ohio State Militia. Entering politics, he served in the Ohio State Senate (1814 to 1815 and 1817 to 1820) and was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1816. In 1825, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress, serving until 1827. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving from 1829 to 1837. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of medicine until his death.
