U.S. Congressman. Moving to Ohio, he worked in his brother’s law firm, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1851 and commenced to practice law in Salem, Ohio. He was a member the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1857 and judge of the ninth judicial district, (1859-67). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses, serving until 1873. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was involved in various business venues. He was a delegate to every Republican National Conventions, (1876-96) and appointed a member of the United States Tariff Commission by President Arthur, serving (1882-98).
