U.S. Congressman. Moving to Belmont County, Ohio, in 1804, he attended Franklin College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1824, and commenced to practice law in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Entering politics, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses (1829 to 1833). He was again elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress (1835 to 1837). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as president judge of the Court of Common Pleas (1840 to 1847). In 1854, he was elected to fill the unexpired term of William B. Caldwell as judge of the Ohio Supreme Court, serving until 1856. After leaving the bench, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
