Cuban President. In 1952, he returned to Cuba after a lengthy exile in Florida and staged a military coup on March 10th. In his previous reign, between 1933 and 1944, he had presided over several presidents as the "Army Chief of Staff", but was essentially in charge. His exile began in 1944, when he was forbidden to seek re-election. Under his second reign, he was on good terms with both the United States and the Mafia. Many American corporations did well in Cuba and it became a major tourist destination. Batista's dictatorial reign came to an end when he fled to the Dominican Republic on January 1, 1959. Not long afterwards, Fidel Castro and his men took Havana. Batista moved into permanent exile in Portugal and Spain, and eventually died in Marbella, Malaga, Spain.
