US Congressman. CSA Congressman. He served several terms as a North Carolina state legislator before working eight years as a state solicitor. He was elected as a United States Representative from North Carolina from 1859 to 1861. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Congress as a Representative from North Carolina (1862-1865). He was a chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1878 until his death in 1889.
