Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born near Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, he served as a Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade, British Army. On November 5, 1854, Lieutenant Clifford was leading a charge on an enemy position at Inkerman, Crimea. When one of his men was wounded and about to fall to the assaults, he went forward, killed one of the enemies with his sword, disabled another and saved the life of his soldier. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was vested the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Hyde Park, on February 24, 1857. Remaining in the Army, he later achieved the rank of Major General. He died at age 56 in Chudleigh, Devon, England.
