Mary Irene Bell Smith was born May 12, 1916 to David Clayton Bell, Sr. and Edna Josephine Downs Bell in Olney, Effingham County, Georgia. She had ten siblings. On December 27, 1930, she married Homer Smith, and they had four children: Edna Rose Smith, Homer Lester Smith, Betty June Smith Hendry, and James Emory Smith, Sr. Edna Rose, the oldest, did not survive infancy. Irene died at age 79 of heart failure and complications from diabetes on September 4, 1995 in Savannah. She is buried beside her husband Homer at the Hinesville Cemetery in Liberty County.

Her ancestry was English, Welsh, and--through the Bell surname--Native American (Lumbee).
