David Clayton Bell, Jr. was born October 23, 1923 to David Clayton Bell, Sr. and Edna Josephine Downs Bell in Olney, Bryan County, Georgia. He had ten older siblings and was the youngest of eleven. On December 29, 1945, David married Daisy Louise Bennett Bell Beard, and they had two children: David Raymond Bell and Nancy Louise Bell Davis. David died of heart failure at age 42 on August 19, 1966 in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. He is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Thunderbolt, Chatham County. After his death his widow Daisy remarried, to Glenn E. Beard.

His ancestry was English, Welsh, and--through the Bell surname--Native American (Lumbee).
