Herbert was the son of Herbert Elmer Drake and Ida Nancy Watson. He worked in the woolen mill in Guilford before moving to Long Island about 1907 with his wife Eva May Witham and two daughters, Thelma (born 1903 in Greenville, ME) and Melba (born 1904 in Guilford, ME) and his mother-in-law Mary Elizabeth Cushing Witham. He was a contractor and carpenter on Long Island with his partner David Darling. He died from complications of an infected tooth.
