Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he served as a Private in the 42nd Regiment of Foot, British Army. During the attack on the Fort of Ruhya, India, April 15, 1858, when the advanced party was at the gate of the Fort, an officer was killed. Private Davis under heavy fired fire, volunteered to carry the body of the officer back to the 42nd Regiment command post. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on May 27, 1859. He died at age 58 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
