In additionto his military service PVT CO B 33D US VOL INF, Andrew Turner was a guard at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth Kansas. On March 26, 1916, during the noon meal in the dining hall, with over 1,000 inmates, and numerous other guards present, Turner was stabbed to death by inmate Robert Stroud, aka the Birdman of Alcatraz. The case drew national attention over the next few years, during the three trials of Robert Stroud, which resulted in his being sentenced to hang for Turner's murder.
