US Senator. He graduated from Franklin College Ohio, in 1839, became a boat builder, schoolmaster, and a student of medicine. He then studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in 1842. In 1861, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1867. After his term, he was appointed by President Andrew Johnson as Minister to Austria, but it was not confirmed by the US Senate. He then resumed the practice of law until his death at age 69.
