Samuel Leonard Tilley

New Brunswick Colony Premier. A member of the Liberal Party and later the Conservative Party, he served in this position from March 1861 until September 1865. He was also one of the Fathers of the Canadian Confederation. The son of a storekeeper, he became a druggist. In 1850 he entered politics when he was elected to the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly as a Liberal and temperance advocate. In 1854 he became Provincial Secretary under Charles Fisher and in March 1861 he replaced Fisher as Premier. In 1865 his government was defeated in the general election and he was replaced by Albert James Smith. He served as a delegate to the Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, London, England, and Quebec City, Canada Canadian Confederation Conferences. When the Confederation became a reality, he served as the Canadian Minister of Customs from 1867 until 1873. In November 1873 he became New Brunswick's lieutenant governor, serving until July 1878 and again from November 1885 until September 1893. From 1878 until 1885 he served as the Canadian Minister of Finance. He died at the age of 78. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
